David Baker,
legendary recording engineer and producer who worked with Frank Zappa,
John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell and zillions of others, died on July 14,
at the age of 58.
I worked with David in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory of Music's
electronic music studio when we were both studying there one summer.
In a box in my studio I have the 1/4" master of a tape piece we
composed together for a dance troupe. I lost touch with David when
he moved back to the US, and didn't realize that the David Baker whose
name I saw on all those recordings was the same person (it's a fairly
common name, so I thought it was a coincidence) until I saw mention
of his studying in Toronto while reading his obituary.
